10 tips for achieving your ideal interior design
Whatever your decorating plans, Théorie du meuble has gathered the best design advice to help you achieve your ideal interior decoration. From choosing your floors to painting your walls, Théorie du meuble brings you its practical, but also aesthetic, advice.
1. Take measurements of your room
Take the measurements of your room and mark them on a plan. Then, add the cut-out shapes of your furniture to find their ideal placement in the room. This will help you imagine how people will move around the furniture or circulate in the room.
2. Identify where natural light shines the most in your room
Identify the areas in your room that benefit most from natural light, from doors or windows, in order to plan the placement of artificial lighting.
3. Plan your interior design...
You should plan your interior design around objects, furniture or even flooring. Choose these elements based on the style that inspires your choice of decor.
4. Choose the colors you want to use
Next, choose the colours you want to use in the room. Generally, it’s best to stick to three colours. You can then experiment and adapt them – see point below.
5. Create a mosaic of the chosen colors
Create a mosaic of materials in these colours around you to help you imagine yourself in this future decor. Remember to take into account the furniture, curtains, walls, floors and doors... Try to imagine the whole thing by taking a few photos of your room. This will allow you to visualise how the colours and tones will look in the space.
6. Start with the walls
Whether you choose paint or wallpaper, your walls will certainly provide the main colour to the room. You can also keep neutral white or grey walls to highlight other colours used elsewhere. Be careful not to overemphasise these colours, as they could attract too much attention if they are not sufficiently balanced by other shades. If you choose a particular colour, choose a matte finish which makes it easier to hide small imperfections. If you want your room to appear larger, opt for bright or light colours. Create a contrast between the walls and a white ceiling to give volume. You can give an effect of depth, for example by creating a colour contrast on the walls facing natural light. You can vary the colour by lightening the shade as you get closer to the light and paint the window wall white.
7. Choose the floor
Now it’s time to choose your flooring. From your mosaic of samples, choose your floor covering. Vinyl, laminate and wood come in a variety of designs and patterns to help you make your choice. Whatever pattern or texture you’re looking for, try to choose a floor covering that contrasts slightly with your walls, for example, two shades lighter or darker. Don’t forget to think about how natural light will affect your floor. Varnished or matte floors will give very different effects.
If you opt for a parquet-effect floor, make sure to place the slats parallel to the dominant light. However, if your room is long, you can also place them lengthwise, parallel to the longest side of the room.
8. Choose the location of your furniture
Once you have the overall decor in place, place your furniture. Don't be afraid to experiment with different combinations to see what works best. Complete the interior design with objects. Be careful not to clutter the space with too many objects, and think about color balance first. For example, a picture and a rug can provide that extra 5% of bright color and give the room character. Don't forget that curtains are an important decor element. They have a consistent look because the fabric doesn't catch light the same way other materials do. They even allow you to vary your lighting by using a voile or tie-back curtains.
9. Arrange your artificial lighting
Lighting plays a very important role in the room, it shapes the space in the evening and gives a special atmosphere to the space. Since pendant lights tend to visually shrink the room, reserve them for places where natural light sources are rarer. Don't forget to provide enough power outlets. When installing your lighting, experiment to vary the light around the room. You can add dimmer switches that allow you to adjust the lighting to create different atmospheres depending on your mood.
Be careful with lights that glare. If you place more indirect lighting, it will add volume by flooding the walls with light. Also consider spotlights nestled in the ceiling that diffuse a soft and more directed light. They can highlight an object or piece of furniture such as a table.
